OPPA Active Jurors are all experienced image competitors themselves and are required to attend ongoing training to ensure their competition and judging skills are kept current.

Over the past 50 years Vern has captured photographic images in virtually every segment of life. During that journey he has photographed captains of industry, presidents, judges, the working man, hobos, funerals, kids, babies, bugs, weddings, families, aerials, autopsies and a whole lot of rocks and weeds. Vern's diverse background and experience has afforded him a unique perspective as he focuses his attention on creating remarkable Infrared Black & White and Color fine art landscape, aerial and architectural images. His latest body of work includes beautiful images from the Oregon Coast, Central Oregon’s High Desert Plateau and the American Southwest. Vern is a (PAPA) Master Photographer and an (OPPA) Fellow of Photography. He teaches basic to advanced level photographic workshops, one on one coaching and consulting with amateur and professional photographers and organizations on how to Judge and Critique others work. Vern and his wife, Paulette are full time residents of Newport and truly love the Central Oregon Coast lifestyle.
Lisa Dillon is a Master Craftsman Photographer and CPP from Portland Oregon. She is also an ASP member and a Fellow of Photography in Oregon. She is in her 14th year of business and specializes in high school senior and family photography. She is a past president of the Professional Photographers of Oregon and currently serves as the president of the Oregon Professional Photographers of Oregon and as a PPA Councilor for the state of Oregon. Lisa mentors several young photographers and teaches classes on Image Competition, How to Be an Image Competition Judge and on High School Senior Photography. As a child, Lisa watched her father develop black and white images in his basement darkroom and watched her own fascination with photography develop as well. Lisa continues to stretch herself in photography learning new skills and taking on new challenges. She uses Image Competition as a way to explore new ideas and build on personal projects.
Mark is an award-winning photographer, teacher, and author based in Portland, Oregon. Mark specializes in helping photographers understand the modern tools of photography and how to use them to fulfill their creative visions. Miriam has owned Haugen’s Galleri Portrait Studio in Monmouth, Oregon along with her husband Neil since 1977. She became a Certified Professional Photographer when the program was new in 1984 because of a strong belief that photography was a profession that required skill and expertise and deserved the same respect as other professions. In 1985 she had her first image accepted into the National Loan Collection and earned her master’s degree from the PPA in 1996. During this time, she and Neil had a custom photo lab that specialized in preparing images for competition. She was highly skilled in the darkroom, as well as traditional artwork, and matting for competition. The transition to digital came in 2001 and she brought the same intensity and attention to detail to the new medium. She is committed to constantly learning and growing and striving to be the best she can be.
Aaron Hockley is a special event and small business photographer who bridges the boundary between the technology and photography worlds. His professional work focuses on building relationships with clients who use his images to drive business. He enjoys experimenting with the worlds of abstract and fine art photography, often bringing unique perspectives to scenes we see every day. In 2015 he was awarded third place for Illustrative/Commercial images at PPA’s Grand Imaging Awards. Aaron is an active OPPA juror. a past recipient of the OPPA President’s Award for service, and served as OPPA’s President in 2017.
Sam Tarrel is a Fine Art Portrait and Commercial photographer in Hillsboro, Oregon where he runs his business, Light Science Studios. Sam is extremely active in the photographic community and his passion for photography is rivaled only by his passion for teaching and educating others. His ultimate goal is always to help each student achieve the most they can in their craft. He is very active in the Oregon Professional Photographers Association, where he is currently serving as the Vice-President, and holds his Certification and multiple degrees from the Professional Photographer of America. He is an informative and engaging instructor, committed to his industry and colleagues, and his students always come away with a greater understanding and confidence in their work after working with him.
Bryan Welsh, of Hillsboro, Oregon is a Portrait photographer and educator.He has received numerous awards in image competitions that include - PPA Loan Collections, Fuji MASTERPIECE Awards and Kodak Gallery Awards. Bryan’s images and articles have been published in numerous publications in the photographic industry. Bryan has his Masters of Photography Degree (M. Photog.) & Photographic Craftsman Degree (Cr. Photog.) and is a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP). He has the Fellow of Photography Degree from the Oregon Professional Photographers Association. Bryan also holds the status of an Approved Photographic Instructor (API) and has over 100 speaking merits (EDU 100). Bryan is the Past President of the Oregon Professional Photographers Association and the elected PPA Councilor for the State of Oregon.
